Fireworks safety

Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s advice for letting off fireworks:

  • Check the conditions at checkitsalright.nz first. Don’t light fireworks in hot, dry or windy weather, or if a fire ban is in place.
  • Check your local council bylaws for where you can light fireworks. Many parks and beaches don’t allow them.
  • Read and follow the instructions on each firework (use a torch, not a naked flame).
  • Light them in a wide-open space, away from anything that could catch fire, like dry grass, hedges and buildings.
  • Keep a bucket of water, hose or fire extinguisher handy.
  • Adults only: never let a child light fireworks, and keep children a safe distance away.
  • Point fireworks at the sky, never at people, pets or homes.
  • Never try to relight a firework that doesn’t go off.
  • Let your neighbours know, and keep pets inside.
  • Soak used fireworks in water before you throw them out, and don’t stockpile fireworks at home.
